We are a digital archive that functions as a resource, engaging
with the visual histories of the Anglo-Indian community through
a nuanced and critical lens. The archive largely focuses on
family photographs and other visual material made within the
community from the late 19th through the 20th centuries.
Importantly, the archive also functions as a space for
critically reevaluating both the community’s erasure from
prevailing narratives, as well as its largely stereotypical
historical representations in mainstream media.
The Anglo-Indian Archives currently holds over a 1500
digitised photographs, as well as oral history interviews with
more than 20 Anglo-Indian families from Chennai, Guwahati and Kochi,
India. The Archives have been actively growing since 2018,
facilitated by the generous collaboration and participation of
numerous families, individuals and institutions within India and
the global Anglo-Indian diaspora.
